Determine Full-time or Part-time Status

Students who are full-time in the program take 12 points for the first three semesters and then 4 points in the last semester.

The Gallatin MA Program defines full-time status as enrollment in a minimum of 12 units in one semester, and half-time status as enrollment in a minimum of 6 units in one semester (the two summer sessions combined are regarded as one semester). Students who have been awarded scholarships from Gallatin must be enrolled as full-time students (12 points per semester) in order to receive the full amount of the scholarship. If enrollment is not full-time, then the scholarship will be prorated.

For the purposes of immigration and federal aid eligibility (student loans), NYU considers full-time status as enrollment in a minimum of 9 units in one semester, and half-time status as enrollment in a minimum of 4.5 units in one semester (the two summer sessions combined are regarded as one semester).

In sum:

  • Full-time is 12  points (per semester) for Gallatin MA Program and for Gallatin scholarships. Half time is 6 points (per semester).
  • Full-time is 9 points (per semester) for visa purposes and for federal financial aid. Half time is 4.5 points (per semester) for federal financial aid.

Prepare to Register

Each semester, you will complete the Plan of Study for approval by your adviser before you register for classes.

Follow these important steps in order to register for classes.

Primary Adviser Assignment

Your primary adviser may be a full-time or part-time faculty member in any school, department, or program at NYU, who is an expert in your field or fields.

We will begin the matching process by consulting the list of faculty you included in your application to see if those faculty are available to work with you. We will update you on this process as it moves ahead.

Please also be aware that advising assignments are not effective until the fall term begins, so if there are academic issues that you would like to discuss with a faculty member, please reach out to us. The Faculty Co-Directors or the Administrative Director will be approving your plans of study for your first fall semester.
